On this sacred day, devotees wake up early, wear new or clean clothes, visit temples and seek the blessings of God and elders. Families and friends greet each other with wishes of happiness, prosperity and success.

Business owners begin a new accounting year and worship Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Ganesha and their chosen deity for progress, prosperity and success in their work.

Gujarati New Year Traditions

On Gujarati New Year, homes, temples and business premises are decorated with flowers, lamps and colourful rangoli designs.

Devotees visit temples in the morning, seek the blessings of God and receive blessings from their elders. People greet each other by saying “Saal Mubarak” and “Nutan Varshabhinandan.”

Sweets and Prasad are shared with family members, friends and visitors. Business owners perform Puja at their establishments before beginning the activities of the new year.

New Year Puja Vidhi

• Clean the home and prayer area early in the morning.
• Take a bath and wear clean or new clothes.
• Create a rangoli and auspicious symbols at the entrance.
• Light a lamp at home or in the temple.
• Worship Lord Ganesha, Goddess Lakshmi and your chosen deity.
• Offer kumkum, rice, flowers, garlands, incense and lamps.
• Offer fruits, sweets and Satvik food.
• Take a pledge to follow good conduct and serve others.
